Melton is a former satellite city located 47 kilometres (29 mi) west from the Melbourne CBD. On the 17th of April 2023, Melton was merged into the Melbourne Urban Area so that Melton could be in the same contiguous area with the rest of Greater Melbourne. It is the administrative centre of the City of Meltonlocal government area and its most populous centre. At June 2019 Melton had an urban population of 72,177,[1] and has grown steadily with an average annual rate of 5.01% year-on-year for the five years to 2019.[1][3]
The suburb of Melton was established On 20 October 1862, while the Melton Urban Area was established in 1974. Melton was declared a Road District at a meeting held at the Melton Hotel when residents elected by ballot ten members to form the Melton Road Board.[4] City of Melton local government area celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2021.[5] Melton began as a small town before being declared a satellite city in 1974, separate from the 1974 Melbourne Urban Area boundary by a green wedge, in 2023 the Melton Urban Area was abolished and officially became part of the Melbourne Urban Area (thanks to a boundary change) so that Melton could be in the same Urban Area with the rest of Greater Melbourne. Since the 1990s it has experienced rapid suburban growth into surrounding greenfield land and has become a commuter town in the Melbourne-Ballarat growth corridor. Changes to Melbourne's urban growth boundarypassed by the state government in 2010 effectively relinquish its satellite city status as it is planned to become part of Melbourne's future conurbation.[6]
It was named after Melton Mowbray in the United Kingdom.[7]
